College of the Redwoods CTE Field Day 2019

On February 9th, students from all over the North Coast gathered at College of the Redwoods for a day of contests and activities to showcase their agriculture-related skills and knowledge. CR hosted 143 students, representing 43 different teams, with competitions in Welding, Wood Working, and Forestry, giving students a great opportunities to show off their skills and explore the CR campus. Operating Engineers Brings Inspiration to Humboldt Schools

Students from Fortuna, East, and Eureka High Schools were a part of a fantastic presentation by the local chapter of Operating Engineers. Operating Engineers works with apprentices and conducts high level trainings for free. Students learned about careers in Heavy Equipment operating and after the presentation, students were invited to operate an excavator simulator, where they learned the controls by moving objects into a cut out with the machine. PG&E Continues Their Lineman Tour

The Linemen of Humboldt County Pacific Gas & Electric have been mighty busy the last several weeks. Students at Hoopa Valley High School received an excellent presentation from three HVHS alumnae all of whom are now Linemen with PG&E. All three alumnae shared their stories of how they got in their field and their success. The volunteers from PG&E informed students how to enter into the world of being a Lineman and the students were then treated to a tour of the PG&E truck and repair equipment. Nate McKeever of McKeever Energy and Electric is sparking inspiration across the county. McKinleyville High School students were treated to a demonstration on how to read an electrical diagram and later were able to apply that knowledge to build an electrical circuit and make it work.
