Hoopa Valley High School Students Trades Tour

On April 6th, Hoopa Valley High School students had a busy day learning all about different career opportunities in trades ranging from building supply, metal fabrication, and construction.  They visited The Mill Yard, McCullough Construction, and O&M Industries.  It was inspiring for the students to learn that The Mill Yard (Tanka Chase) and McCullough Construction (Macky McCullough) are owned by Hoopa Valley High School alumni.  The students also heard from John Barber of O&M Industries, also a Hoopa Valley High alumni, about how he became a metal fabricator. We would like to thank the employees of The Mill Yard, O&M Industries, and McCullough Construction for preparing and providing excellent presentations to the students. The students were impressed by the tours and appreciated the information they learned for future career...

City Ambulance Visits Fortuna High Students

Recently the students in Mrs. Dixon’s AP Biology and Biology & Community Health classes got the opportunity to learn more about a career as a Paramedic.  Sarah Grabeal of City Ambulance spent the first half of the presentation sharing about her career and answering student questions.  The second half of the presentation included a tour of the ambulance, and all the students got to see and experience what it’s like in the back of an ambulance.  The students and Mrs. Dixon thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. We’re excited about the potential of the Health Career Exploration Project to grow and give more local students the opportunity to connect with professionals in the health care industry.  HCEP is an initiative under the Education at Work effort to provide opportunities to learn more about health care and investigate health career opportunities in our local community.  With your help, Education at Work is working hard to make a difference in helping students prepare for their futures, and supporting the development of our future workforce. Thank you again to Sarah and City Ambulance for the excellent presentation, and supporting these Fortuna High...

Recology Visits Automotive Technology Students

Earlier last month, a team from Recology visited Eureka High’s Automotive Technology classes.  The presenters included the Operations Manger, Maintenance Manager, and two Mechanics.  The Recology staff shared information on the job opportunities and benefits at Recology, the importance of learning in their automotive technology classes, and the need for new technicians getting into the trade. Recology brought and street sweeper and a service truck for the students to tour. The presentation also included diesel engine computer diagnostics performed in front of everyone, and the vehicle inspection process.  Many of the students got the chance to speak one on one with the presenters and get their questions answered. A big thank you to the team at Recology; Frank Nelson, Milo Falor, Jared Eggel, and Leonard Cahill for providing the presentation to Sean Mitchell’s Automotive Technology classes.  We’re excited about the potential of the Trades Academy to grow and give more local students the opportunity to connect with trades industry craftsman and businesses.  The Trades Academy is a key initiative in the Education At Work effort to bridge what students learn in their classrooms to their career or higher education success.  Education At Work is working hard to include many community partners from business, government, nonprofit industry sectors, CR, HSU, and local schools.  With your help, we are making a difference in helping kids prepare for their futures, and supporting the...
