Students Zoom with Leaders about Civics

(Eureka)— Humboldt County high school students and their social science teachers will meet with local leaders to discuss how government works in a new Zoom series, coordinated by the Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE). “All About Civics” Zoom meetings will feature elected leaders, presented in one-hour forums throughout the month of October. There are currently openings for more students to participate.

High school teachers will coordinate the sessions with their students, then the elected leaders will participate by answering students’ questions. The goals of the All About Civics program include encouraging students to exercise their legal right to vote when they turn 18, to be informed and think critically about issues and for them to be able to discuss and debate issues with respect. The program also aims to provide students with ways to get involved as volunteers to support our community.

Local elected leaders who are invited to participate in the series include:

  • Jared Huffman, Congressman
  • Kelly Sanders, Humboldt County Registrar of Voters
  • Mike McGuire, State Senator
  • Jim Wood, Assembly member
  • Maggie Fleming, Humboldt County District Attorney

The series runs through October 28. Local high school teachers have been asked to provide the number of students who will attend the sessions. Links to the sessions will be provided to registered students.
