In April, Humboldt Sponsors granted several awards totaling more than $7,000 to support a number of youth programs operated by the Humboldt County Office of Education. These grants were awarded to special education programs, the foster and homeless youth education program, and the Rising Stars Foundation.
Special Beginnings, serving children from birth to 5 years old, plans to use this year’s grant funds to purchase classroom supplies to provide specific student needs.
Glen Paul Special Education programs, working with students from three to 22 years old at the Glen Paul School and at special day classes throughout the county, will use the funds to purchase scooter boards, mushroom paddles and a bounce house, as well as to cover field trip costs.
Grants to the Rising Stars Foundation will help fund travel and registration costs for county champions who will be traveling out of the area to compete in the State History Day competition near Sacramento and the State Science Fair in Los Angeles later this spring.
The Foster and Homeless Youth Services Program will use the grant funds to purchase emergency food supplies to provide extra support for the foster and homeless youth in Humboldt County. “In order for schools to continue to meet the very basic needs of our most vulnerable students, community partnerships are needed now more than ever,” stated Roger Golec, Foster/Homeless Youth Services Coordinator. “On behalf of our students, families and the HCOE McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program, we would like to thank the Humboldt Sponsors organization for their generosity.”
