Position Summary
The Career Technical Education (CTE) Teacher shall report directly to the designated program administrator and assume responsibility to plan, implement, and provide academic and skills training to students in a particular field of expertise as outlined in the course curriculum. The CTE Teacher is responsible for carrying out a career technical education program based on the California CTE Model Curriculum Standards that prepares students for high-skill, high-wage careers aligned with post-secondary education and consistent with regional workforce needs. The CTE teacher facilitates work-based learning and increases employment opportunities by serving as an active liaison between employers and the classroom.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Career Technical Education teachers may have received their credential through a traditional University based credentialing program with an authorization in the appropriate CTE sector, or they may come from industry and qualify for the Designated Subjects CTE Credential. Each route is equally acceptable as long as the teacher has acquired the appropriate work experience in the industry in which they are teaching.
Supervision Received and Exercised
This position is under the supervision of the designated Career Technical Education Administrator.

- Design and implement relevant curriculum following the CTE Model Curriculum Standards for the given industry/pathway utilizing input from the advisory committee;
- Instruct pathway courses for CTE pathway completion, incorporates appropriate industry-recognized certifications and training, and works toward achieving the high-quality elements of Career Technical Education;
- Instruct students in appropriate job-seeking and retention skills;
- Develop, maintain, and conduct required program advisory committee meetings;
- Establish and advise a Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) chapter;
- Serve as liaison with business and industry and actively places and supervises students in part-time positions of either a community classroom or cooperative education nature and provides related instruction as required;
- Assist in regular program promotion and with development of promotional materials for enhanced community-wide awareness;
- Provide instruction that is appropriately paced and directed to specific occupational skills while accounting for individual differences in ability, motivation, and learning rates;
- Establish and maintain a suitable learning environment that promotes student growth and skill mastery and assures student safety;
- Design, implement, monitor, and review appropriate training plans for students and record skill attainment accurately and timely;
- Guide students in making career-related decisions;
- Establish and maintain student/program files as required, including follow-up survey information and placement records;
- Support the policies and programs of the Humboldt County Office of Education and perform assigned duties consistent with school, district or office policies, regulations, and procedures;
- Maintain professional competency by actively engaging in employer directed in-service activities and other similar opportunities provided to staff;
- Cooperatively engages in the professional evaluation process with supervisor to ensure ongoing professional growth and competence;
- Effectively communicates with staff, parents, and agencies;
- Attend regular and special staff meetings and actively participates as a member of the educational team;
- Respond effectively to the input from and coordinates tasks with district/school personnel as required by assignment;
- Modify the traditional modes of delivering instructional services to reasonably accommodate an individual’s disabilities;
- Create and maintain a safe learning environment.
Qualifications (aka Employment Standards)

Education and Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred; a minimum of 3 years full-time experience working in the industry associated with the CTE industry sector may be substituted
Experience
- Work experience in the associated CTE industry sector;
- Experience working with high school age youth is preferred.
Credentials Required
- Possess and maintain a valid California Career Technical Education credential in the industry sector of the teaching assignment.
OR
- The ability to qualify for a Designated Subjects Career Technical Education teaching credential in the assigned industry sector (details can be found here: Commission Leaflet CL-888)
Working Conditions (Work Environment)
The CTE Teacher will work on a school site and may be required to share classroom space with other teachers. The location of the work may change depending on the needs of the schools that HCOE serves. In addition, there may be an element of “community classroom” where the CTE Teacher may be required to supervise students on a work site as a part of work-based learning / “community classroom”
Environmental Elements
Depending upon the Career Technical Industry Sector associated with the teaching assignment, work may occur outdoors at times.
Physical Demands
There is some degree of physical ability and exertion required of all teaching positions. Over time, the physical demands of any position are subject to change. Depending upon the particular assignment, teachers could be expected to:
- Stand, sit and/or move about for sustained periods.
- Move about in non-traditional instructional environments; i.e., areas of the community.
- Report to multiple worksites on a given day or during the workweek.
- Communicate effectively in person and via telephone and other electronic media to individuals and groups of varying sizes.
- Exercise physical control over students who are acting out and/or offer physical assistance to students who might be themselves physically impaired.
- Conduct instructional programs within pre-designated break periods and time schedules.
- Maintain an appropriate personal demeanor during periods of heightened stress created by outside factors not always within the ability of the teacher to control at the time.
Other Requirements
- Must be fingerprinted and a satisfactory Department of Justice records check must be received by HCOE prior to employment.
- TB testing and/or risk assessment will be required upon employment.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical (if applicable).
- May be required to obtain first aid and CPR certificates within the first 6 to 12 months of employment.
- May be required to drive with or without students; some positions may require a California driver’s license, proof of insurance and possible participation in the DMV PUll Notice Program once employed.
