Learning Specialist – Equity & Inclusion

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Learning Support Services Coordinator, the Equity and Inclusion Specialist performs a variety of tasks to assist in coordinating the successful implementation of diversity initiatives, programs, and curriculum. Employee works collaboratively with the offices of Learning Support Services, Prevention and Intervention, School Support / Accountability, and Personnel. Employee develops and facilitates professional learning opportunities for Humboldt County’s Districts/Charter Schools to address disproportionate academic, social-emotional, and behavioral outcomes for marginalized students. Employee provides expert consultation, using improvement science best practices, to school districts/charter schools and county office personnel that examine for root cause and identify appropriate interventions. Employee assists in developing culturally sustaining strategies for instruction, participates in the implementation of these strategies, and assists administrators with evaluating the effectiveness of diversity and inclusion initiatives. Employee is able to effectively express ideas orally and in writing, and possess skill and background in developing program and training content as appropriate to facilitate district needs. Employee assesses the presence of cultural and gender-biases in current curriculum, practices, and standards. The employee will serve as a liaison between the Humboldt County Office of Education and community partners including public agencies and higher education.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as “research-based strategies expert” for instructional program planning, presenting, facilitating, collaborating, coaching, creating and curating resources within one or more areas of expertise based upon knowledge, experience and/or specialized training.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the areas of inclusion, equity, and belonging.
  • Serve as a resource/coach for educators with respect to curriculum design and student support. Specifically, the Equity & Inclusion Specialist will promote, advise upon, and support curriculum development aimed at teaching and learning to think critically about cultural diversity.
  • Work with the Personnel Office on strategies to recruit, welcome, and retain staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Assist the Superintendent in aligning HCOE’s practices, policies, and procedures in the areas of equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Works in concert with districts on parent and community engagement efforts.
  • Plan, develop, and facilitate diversity and inclusion-focused education programs, and events for administration, staff, students, and families throughout Humboldt County.
  • Develop workshops focused on teaching adults how to work with all students most effectively, including understanding the role that social and cultural factors play in both teaching and learning.
  • Work with communications center to publicize diversity-related events, educational opportunities, workshops, etc. for students, faculty, families, and the local community.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities; attend conferences and professional meetings in order to remain current with diversity and inclusion issues that may affect the School.
  • Actively research new pedagogies, curricula, and best practices that address common
  • classroom challenges in teaching about cultural competence, identity, and inequality.
  • Keep parents, administrators and community citizens informed about various diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives being employed to resolve educational issues.
  • Maintain relationships with diversity related businesses, with the intention of working together.
  • Work in concert with districts on parent and community engagement efforts.
  • Assume responsibility for other projects as assigned by supervisor.

Employment Standards

Physical Requirements

  • Sufficient vision to read printed materials;
  • Sufficient hearing to conduct in-person and telephone conversations;
  • Sufficient mobility to move about the county office and other sites as may be required
  • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation distance, on the telephone, and to address groups of varying sizes;
  • Physical and emotional stamina to cope with sometimes stressful situations and conditions.

Education, Experience & Requirements

  • Possess a current California Teaching Credential;
  • Possess a California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL) and/or Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate;
  • A California Administrative Services Credential is desirable, Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Understanding of Instructional Coaching practices;
  • Demonstrate competence in communicating effectively with professional staff and representatives of other agencies in written and oral form, especially with K-12 educators, public and private agencies, and higher education;
  • Possess at least 5 years of successful teaching experience, preferably at both elementary and secondary levels;
  • Possess specialized skills, specific experience and advanced training and/or certification within one or more core academic areas of the school curriculum;
  • Have a record of excellence in making small and large group presentations, including demonstration teaching skills and workshop/conference speaking;
  • Ability to prepare successful grant applications; complete clear and complete proposals and reports;
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines;
  • Ability to research, design, and effectively present relevant training materials ;
  • Ability to work proficiently with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications;
  • Ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision;
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others;
  • Ability to provide services in the office as well as in various sites throughout the county, sometimes serving multiple sites in a single workday and must be willing to travel;
